Changing the barrel lock on your uPVC door is not a difficult task to carry out except you lost your keys and if that’s the case, then I’m afraid you’ll require the services of a locksmith. That’s because changing your barrel lock is easier when you have the key otherwise it’ll require expertise and some certain tools that you probably don’t have.
If the key to your barrel lock is still available, then go ahead and follow the steps I’ll be giving you shortly.
How to change a barrel lock
Asides from the key, before you’ll be able to change your barrel lock, there are a few other things you are required to have.
- You’ll need a uPVC lock barrel replacement. Don’t know where to get that? Visit multipointlocks.co.uk
- You’ll need a screwdriver.
Once you have both requirements, then you can follow through with the steps outlined below:
Remove the lock from your uPVC door
- Before you start removing the lock, ensure that your door is wide open so you don’t have to worry about it closing during the operation.
- Start loosening the screws that are holding the door in place using your Philips-head screwdriver. Remove screws at the top and bottom of the door handle.
- Once all the screws have been removed, both the interior and outer handle will slide out together. Hold and slowly remove the interior and exterior handles, you may need them in future so you wouldn’t want to damage them now.
Replacing the door barrel
- Find the lock barrel’s screw that’s located beneath the door lock. Tip: it usually stands out from the locking mechanism of the screws of the door since it has a different colour.
- After locating the screw, remove the screw.
- After removing the screw, carry your current key, insert the key into the barrel and twist it to the right.
- Now you’ll be able to pull out the barrel without difficulty.
- Carry your new barrel together with the keys. Insert the new keys into the new barrel and place them into the now-empty hole.
- Start and continue twisting the key until the barrel fits in perfectly. Once that happens, you would be able to twist the key without difficulty.
- Once the new barrel lock is properly aligned, carry the lock barrel screw and screw them into place.
Placing back the handles
- Carry both sides of the handle together with the spindle. Insert the spindle into the handle’s socket before inserting it through the door.
- Carry the opposite side of the handle and ensure that it fits at the other side of the door, secured in the spindle hole.
- When the door handles are now on both sides of the door, insert the screws into the holes and screw them in place to secure the handle.
