Influence of the sufi teachings on th creation of talismans-taweez

I

Sufism is a mystical form of Islam and in consideration with its practice, Sufis developed their own occult practices, talents and oral teachings. Sufism is a practical example of how, in Islam, there are many ways to worship the one God.Sufi practices include:

* night visions and sharing them with other people who have similar experiences;

* spirit communication and receiving knowledge from spiritual beings who may bypass the human mind.

The Sufi movement is a mystical and esoteric Islamic tradition that emphasizes love, forgiveness of sins, and devotion to the cause of universal peace in God.It is also known as tasawwuf, meaning “to repeat” or “to worship”.Sufism has been described as a “religious movement whose basic ideas are the non-observance of the law and asceticism, the practice of meditative concentration and mental worship, to love God with all one’s heart, to observe Him in everything, and to do good deeds.”

The Sufi teachings also influenced Islamic science of the 9th-century. After many years of discussion and disagreement, a sufi saint named Haji BektashVeli constructed “The Twelve Earthly Branches” and contributed to the spreading of sufi practices such as taweez and ruqya, which helped to combat disease and enhance health.In the early 9th century, Islamic scientists made progress in translation by Ibn al-Nadim who translated into Arabic “Kitab al-Fihrist”, a 10th century encyclopedia of over 20,000 works on science, philosophy and mysticism.

Nowadays, some scholars holds and argues that sufi ideas are have a strong influence on the creation of taweez. Other scholars decline this conclusion too. Further research is needed here to make sure that if still believe in the notion of “no influence” on the taweez creation, there will be a new argument for you through which we can debunk the notion of bringing into existence these miraculous talismans read thousands old books related to Islamic Mysticism, but could not provide enough evidence in order to support their opinion. In conclusion, “no influence” is an incorrect notion that needs to be debunked. Sufi ideas have indeed an influence on the creation of taweez talismans, and we need to study this more deeply.

Sufi faith is one of the major influences on the design and development of Islamic talismans such as taweez, arkan, safahat, jemma’a, etc. The creation of sufi talismans or taweez caught public interest during the 10th century when the western sufis traveling to Cairo stopped and started teaching taweez sects in different locations. Unfortunately, in the past, the word taweez has been often misused as a general expression meaning talisman. This mistake is because of the fact that many of these so-called taweez are generally not based on Islamic principles and have no religious value. They have usually been created as amulets to be worn by people to protect themselves from the harm caused by evil spirits.There are many books written in Arabic, Persian and Turkish languages on designing taweez. Most of them have not been translated into English. The book “Taweez-the science of designing Islamic talismans” is the only book that has been translated into English, it was written in Arabic by the famous 10th century Islamic scholar Ibn al-Nafis.

Mohamed TalbiIbn Izmaylwas a great Sufi. His death in the year 814 is the most significant date in the history of circulation of talismans, particularly taweez. Talismans helped Muslims to strengthen their faith, help lower their woes and introduce a lot of prosperity, fame and spiritual cleansing while they were all through their lives. Thetaweezat of Ibn Izmayl are the most important form of talismans. It was said that they had the power to ward off the evil eye and seduction by any other person, male or female. The same saying is stated in many Sufi works belonging to different periods and collections. Ibn Izmayl believed in the power of taweez and stated that he used to get his power from God and he had no other authority. He also tried to heal people’s health with talismans that were created by him, using them when they were sick, praying for their forgiveness afterwards.
