If you’re worrying about what to buy a gamer relative, need a larger selection for your brand new PlayStation 4 console or want to get rid of those pesky gift vouchers, we’ve got you covered with our list of some of the biggest games to launch on Sony’s console this past year.

From the latest instalments of annual AAA franchises to games 10 years in development, 2016 has been a great year for video game releases – many of which are exclusive to the PlayStation 4.

Whether you’re into action-packed multiplayer action or a breathtaking single-player experience (or anything in between), there’s bound to be something to catch your attention.

If you fancy seeing which titles we think deserve special recognition, head to our Games of the Year list . You can also check out the biggest Xbox One games of 2016 here.

1. The Last Guardian

Almost a decade in the making, this action-adventure title from the director behind the acclaimed PlayStation 2 game Shadow of the Colossus has been a long time coming. Although it’s not quite a masterpiece , it is a unique and wonderful game that’s worth your attention.

2. Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration

Although the next instalment of the Tomb Raider franchise hit the Xbox One last year, this PlayStation version marks the 20th anniversary of the action-adventure classic series – and this could very well be one of the best additions yet.

3. Ratchet & Clank

A re-imagining of a classic PlayStation 2 game, Ratchet & Clank pulls out all the stops, managing to be both one of the most fun and most visually impressive platformer-shooter games to date.

Whether you’re a returning fan or a newcomer to the franchise, this is a game that will be enjoyed by any member of the family.

4. DOOM

This is more than just a standard reboot of the beloved first-person-shooter that popularised a genre – this is one of the finest shooter games to ever grace the medium, and does the name DOOM more than proud. It’s no wonder we ranked it highly in our Games of the Year list .

5. Titanfall 2

As if DOOM wasn’t enough, Titanfall 2 graced us with another stellar first-person shooter experience.

With a surprisingly deep single-player campaign mode and a vastly improved multiplayer mode, this is an easy must-have for fast-paced action lovers.

6. Overwatch

Overwatch was only released earlier this year, and already it’s the unchallenged king of online class-based shooters.

With a fantastic variety of playable characters and a gameplay style we’re happy to actually call ‘fun’, this game is wonderfully accessible for anyone willing to sink their teeth into it.

7. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

This year’s instalment of Call of Duty changes the formula a bit by launching the game into space. With a solid single-player campaign and the multiplayer experience you’ve come to expect, Infinite Warfare is an obvious choice for many gaming fanatics.

Of course, with special editions bundling a remastered version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the decision is a little easier.

8. Uncharted 4

The climatic conclusion to PlayStation’s beloved Uncharted series, Uncharted 4 is one of the most acclaimed games of the year.

This action-adventure powerhouse managed to meet its high expectations and then some, with an incredible narrative and improved gameplay from its predecessors.

If you’ve not touched the series before, we highly recommend buying the collection and digging in.

9. Dishonored 2

Dishonored 2 is a stealth-action adventure that’s at the top of its game. Just like its brilliant predecessor, you can slink into the shadows or slice your way through enemies in one of this year’s finest releases. A treat for fans and newcomers alike.

10. FIFA 17

There’s a reason that FIFA is such a popular series – it’s simply the most accurate football simulator around, bar none.

This year’s instalment doesn’t fail to deliver, with improved gameplay and an entirely brand new story mode called ‘The Journey’. Perfect for anyone even remotely interested in the sport.
